Express Entry Category-Based Draws

Canada’s Express Entry system is evolving to meet the country’s economic and labor market needs more effectively. One of the key enhancements is the category-based rounds of invitations, which target candidates with specific skills, work experience, and language proficiency in high-demand sectors.

What Are Category-Based Rounds of Invitations?

Category-based draws allow Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to invite Express Entry candidates who meet specific eligibility criteria set by the Minister. These criteria include:

  • Work experience in a high-demand sector.
  • Strong language proficiency in either English or French.
  • Relevant educational qualifications.

Unlike general and program-specific draws, category-based rounds focus on selecting high-ranking candidates who can help achieve Canada’s economic goals.

How Are Categories Selected?

The chosen categories for category-based draws are based on:

  • Labor market data and economic projections.
  • Consultations with provinces, territories, and industry stakeholders.
  • Skills shortages in key sectors.

Each year, the government submits a report to Parliament detailing:

  • The selected categories from the previous year.
  • The rationale and methodology behind the selection.
  • The number of invitations issued for each category.

Express Entry Categories for 2023

For 2023, Canada has identified six key categories for targeted invitations:

French-Language Proficiency

Canada aims to increase Francophone immigration outside of Quebec. Candidates with strong French skills (CLB 7 or higher) are given priority in these rounds.

With high demand for healthcare professionals, this category targets candidates with experience in roles such as:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Paramedics
  • Medical Laboratory Technologists
  • Pharmacists

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Occupations

To address shortages in STEM fields, Express Entry invites professionals in:

  • Software Engineering
  • Data Science
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Civil & Mechanical Engineering
  • Cybersecurity

Trade Occupations

Canada’s construction and skilled trades industries require workers in:

  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Carpenters
  • Welders
  • HVAC Technicians

Transport Occupations

To support Canada’s logistics and transportation industry, this category includes:

  • Truck Drivers
  • Aircraft Mechanics
  • Railway Conductors
  • Heavy Equipment Operators

Agriculture & Agri-Food Occupations

Agriculture is a vital part of the Canadian economy, with demand for:

  • Farm Supervisors
  • Butchers & Meat Cutters
  • Food Processing Workers

How Category-Based Invitations Work

During category-based rounds, candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet the category requirements will be ranked based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Invitations to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency will be issued to the highest-ranking candidates.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and Category-Based Draws

Candidates with a Provincial Nomination will continue to receive invitations through:

  • General Express Entry draws
  • PNP-specific rounds

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, significantly boosting a candidate’s chances of receiving an ITA.

Benefits of Category-Based Express Entry Draws

  • Faster PR Processing – Prioritizes in-demand occupations, expediting the process for skilled workers.
  • Better Job Prospects – Increases chances of getting a job offer in Canada by focusing on high-demand skills.
  • Stronger Economic Impact – Ensures newcomers contribute effectively to Canada’s labor market.
  • Support for French-Speaking Candidates – Encourages Francophone immigration, creating a diverse workforce.

How to Improve Your Chances of Selection

  • Boost your CRS score by improving your language proficiency (IELTS/CELPIP/TEF/TCF).
  • Gain relevant work experience in high-demand sectors.
  • Secure a Provincial Nomination for an additional 600 CRS points.
  • Enhance your education credentials by completing an ECA (Educational Credential Assessment).
