Canada’s Spousal Open Work Permit Pilot Program (OWPP) was launched on December 22, 2014, to support family reunification. It allows spouses or common-law partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to work while waiting for their sponsorship application to be processed.
The program ensures that sponsored individuals can financially support themselves and their families while awaiting their permanent residency approval.
Key Benefits of SOWP
- Allows spouses to work for any employer in Canada.
- Reduces financial strain during the 12-month sponsorship processing period.
- Helps families stay together without the need for one spouse to return home for work.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP), you must:
✔ Be living in Canada.
✔ Be sponsored under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada (SCLPC) Class.
✔ Hold valid temporary resident status (visitor, student, or worker).
✔ Reside at the same address as your sponsor.
Applying for a Spousal Open Work Permit
A new SOWP application can be submitted with your permanent residence application. To apply, you must:
📌 Include the correct application fees.
📌 Mail or courier your application to the appropriate IRCC processing center.
Can a Spousal Open Work Permit Be Extended?
A SOWP is tied to the status of the sponsoring spouse. If the sponsor’s permit expires, the SOWP must be renewed. You will need to reapply based on your spouse’s valid status to continue working in Canada.
