Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Canada offers the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to international students who have completed their studies at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). This open work permit allows graduates to work for any employer in Canada without needing a job offer. The PGWP is valid for up to three years, depending on the length of the completed study program.

One of the biggest advantages of the PGWP is that it enables graduates to gain Canadian work experience, which is beneficial when applying for permanent residency. Many immigration programs in Canada reward applicants who have studied and worked in the country.

PGWP Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, an applicant must:

  • Have completed an academic, vocational, or professional training program of at least 8 months at a DLI.
  • Ensure the program leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
  • Have been a full-time student in Canada during every academic session of the program.
  • Provide an official transcript and a letter from the DLI confirming program completion.

Eligible Institutions

Graduates from the following institutions can apply for a PGWP:

  • Public post-secondary institutions, including:
  • Colleges
  • Trade or technical schools
  • Universities

PGWP Validity Duration

The duration of a PGWP depends on the length of the completed study program:

  • Less than 8 months → Not eligible for a PGWP.
  • 8 months to less than 2 years → PGWP valid for the same length as the program.
    • Example: A 10-month program will result in a 10-month PGWP.
  • 2 years or more → PGWP valid for 3 years.
  • Multiple programs completed → May combine PGWP durations if programs are DLI-eligible and each is over 8 months long.

PGWP Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for a PGWP is within 180 days (6 months) of receiving:

  • The official transcript
  • A letter from the DLI confirming program completion

Options If Study Permit Expires Before Receiving PGWP

If a student’s study permit expires before obtaining final grades, they can:

  1. Apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer.
  2. Leave Canada and apply for a PGWP from their home country.
